York County is under a drought watch and wildfire warning

York County is under a drought watch as the area has had little rain in weeks, and a fire danger warning has been issued for Friday.

The state Department of Environmental Protection issued drought warnings for more than 30 counties in the commonwealth on Friday. Additionally, a drought warning is in effect for Berks and Schuylkill counties, a news release said.

“Pennsylvania received very little rain in September and October, capping six dry months, particularly in the southeastern part of the state. DEP makes drought declarations based on long-term trends; “A rainy week may not improve an area’s drought status,” acting DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley said in a news release. “We want residents to be aware of these conditions and be mindful of their water usage.”

Residents and businesses are encouraged to voluntarily conserve water as the drought continues, the release said.

According to the township's website, Dover Township has already enacted mandatory restrictions on non-essential water use.

So far this year, York Water Company has recorded a rainfall deficit of 7.67 inches. Only 0.17 inches of rain fell at York Airport in Jackson Township in October.

A red flag warning has been issued for York County until 7 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. It warns of rapid growth in wildfires due to strong winds, low humidity and dry fuels.

“Possibly. Fires that develop can quickly get out of control and be difficult to contain,” it says.

York County commissioners have issued a burn ban that goes into effect today. It prohibits all open burning, including fires in kegs and fire pits.

Fireworks are also not allowed unless the local municipality has given permission, the ban says.
