Yankees vs. Guardians score, live updates: New York aims to advance to the World Series in ALCS Game 5

The New York Yankees are on the verge of reaching their first World Series since 2009, but they'll have to overcome a Cleveland Guardians team that has shown some offensive prowess in its last two games. While Cleveland triumphed in Game 3, they couldn't quite complete the comeback in Friday night's loss in Game 4, leaving them vulnerable to elimination in Game 5 on Saturday in Cleveland.

LHP Carlos Rodón is on the rise for the Yankees and is looking to build on his impressive performance in Game 1, in which he pitched six innings, giving up just one run and recording nine strikeouts. For the Guardians, it's right-hander Tanner Bibee, who has a 3.60 ERA this postseason. He pitched 1 1/3 innings in Game 2 against the Yankees, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

Can the Yankees finish the job and avoid returning home for Game 6? We'll find out soon enough.

  • Middle 3: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

After this first inning, the Guardians are now settling in. Bibee just finished his second straight 1-2-3 inning by striking out Aaron Judge.

    Cleveland's lead is 1.

  • After 2: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

Josh Naylor made it to third with a very soft single, and then Bo Naylor hit him with a deep double down the right field line. The Guardians strike first and take a 1-0 lead.

  • Middle 2: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

This was a much better inning for Cleveland. Bibee struck out both Volpe and Wells, and then Verdugo flew left. We're still tied up.

  • After 1: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

That's a quick 1-2-3 inning for Rodon, and we're still tied 0-0 after 1 in Cleveland.

  • 94.4 mph to make the game at the plate. Incredible.

  • Center 1: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

The Yankees still loaded the bases, but Bibee got out of the inning after Anthony Rizzo singled to left for the third out. That was almost really bad, really fast for the Guardians.

  • Torres hit a single up the middle for the Yankees, and then Juan Soto nearly scored on him with a deep double that took it to the wall.

But somehow the Guardians pulled off a perfect relay to get Torres out for the first time after the home inning. What a game to keep this thing at 0-0.

  • Tanner Bibee threw out the first pitch and we are officially at Progressive Field.

  • The Yankees' offense is starting to take hold just in time, while the Guardians' bullpen is showing the wear and tear of October.
