While millions of Americans will vote next Election Day, some may be wondering how the national holiday will affect their mail.

While Election Day, which this year falls on Tuesday, November 5, is not a federal holiday, many companies are adjusting their hours to give employees time to cast their votes. Some schools were also closed in order to be able to work more efficiently as polling stations.

However, when it comes to your everyday mail, Americans shouldn't expect any disruptions.

The United States Postal Service

The United States Postal Service (USPS) operates regular hours on Election Day, and there are only a few days on which the postal service recognizes holidays.

These include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

For this reason, the USPS should operate during normal hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.

Other deliverers will also deliver mail and parcels as usual.

UPS, FedEx and Amazon

United Parcel Service (UPS) typically operates from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, while FedEx offices also typically operate from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.

Amazon will also deliver packages as usual since the company does not recognize Election Day as a holiday.

Where is Election Day considered a holiday?

Over 10 states recognize Election Day as a holiday, meaning state offices will remain closed. You should check your specific location for more information about which offices or schools may be affected.

Only five states — Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York and West Virginia — recognize Election Day as a federal holiday and require employers to take time off to vote.

Nine other states now consider Election Day a holiday but do not require paid leave for voting, including Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Virginia.

Are banks and courts open on election day?

Major banking institutions such as Bank of America, PNC Bank and Wells Fargo will be open as usual on Tuesday.

Keep in mind that many state courts remain closed on Election Day if the local government considers it a holiday. In affected states, all court employees will be released and no hearings will be scheduled for that day.

This Election Day, Americans will choose between former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee. There are now 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 34 seats in the US Senate up for election this year.
