Polls are open on Election Day and many voters are already lining up to cast their votes on who they think should be the next president of the United States, along with other political seats up for grabs this year.

As Election Day arrived, the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris was still close to determine who would sit in the White House for the next four years. National polls before Election Day on November 5, 2024 showed Harris with only a slight advantage over Trump, so it's still anyone's choice.

Here's a look at the latest polls released Tuesday morning and everything else you need to know about Election Day.

When do we vote in the USA?

Today! Election day for the US general election is Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

When will we know who will be elected president?

This can take some time.

The anticipation of election night and the results does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be in the morning. In 2020, President Joe Biden's victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters have the opportunity during early voting and on Election Day to vote for the candidates they believe are best suited for the political office for which they are running. However, counting all ballots takes time, depending on the state and applicable election laws.

Federal law requires governors to issue documents, called certificates of determination, that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to elect the president and vice president. Secretaries of state, or another official depending on the state, compiles the election results from local and county governments so that the winner can be announced.

Representatives for the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia – all states that are trending toward Harris in polls – told USA TODAY they intend to certify the results regardless of the winner. And senior election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be influenced.

Who is likely to win the presidential race?

In September, Allan Lichtman, a historian known for accurately predicting nine of the last ten presidential elections, chose Harris to be the next President of the United States, and his prediction still stands just days before Election Day.

On Tuesday, Lichtman repeated his prediction of a Harris victory on his YouTube channel, even though Harris' lead was shrinking in battleground states and the polls were close.

“Nothing has changed in my prediction that I made on September 5th,” Lichtman said, “contrary to the polls.”

Is Election Day a federal holiday?

No Election Day is a federal holiday, but some locations may be closed on Election Day depending on your region and the buildings used as polling places.
