Which states does Kamala Harris need to win the 2024 election?

Which states does Kamala Harris need to win the 2024 election?

As of 9 p.m. ET, polls have closed in most states, bringing the end of the race for the White House into focus. Almost a dozen states were called for each candidate.

The path to the presidency for Democrat Kamala Harris is becoming increasingly difficult as Republican Donald Trump expands his margins in red states and appears to be outperforming in other states.

None of the seven battleground states in the 2024 presidential election – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – have yet been called.

As of 10:48 p.m. ET, Trump is leading in Georgia with 51.1 percent of the vote. Vice President Kamala Harris has 48.2 percent of the vote. An estimated 88 percent of votes have been counted in the Peach State, meaning Harris could still make up ground in an election expected to be one of the closest in American history.

Here's how Harris can make it back to the White House:

Which states does Kamala Harris need to win?

Vice President Harris has several different paths to the White House, but they are all based on winning swing states, as no other states appeared willing to change their positions compared to the last two elections.

That means potentially winning all of the swing states in the so-called “blue wall,” a bloc of states around the Great Lakes that had reliably voted for the Democratic candidate for 30 years until Trump was able to break through and win several of those states in 2016. The removal of states from the “blue wall” played the most important role in giving Trump his surprise victory in this first election.

However, Harris can also choose one of North Carolina, Georgia or another Sun Belt state to ease the pressure of running the gauntlet on the blue wall.

Which states did Harris win?

Harris has already won several states that typically vote for Democrats in presidential elections, including New York, where the vice president would win with zero percent of the vote, according to media reports.

Harris also won Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois and Maryland, according to Associated Press projections.

What are the swing states in the 2024 presidential election?

The swing states of Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada are likely to decide the election as pre-election polls remained within the margin of error and it was impossible to tell who might have an advantage.

Early voting gave Harris an advantage in Michigan and Pennsylvania – the latter remains the potential kingmaker for many analysts – while Trump took early leads in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Georgia.
