Here's how to watch election coverage on cable TV

Live coverage from CBS News on TV and cable begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET, hosted by Norah O'Donnell from CBS News' election headquarters in New York City. Find yours Local CBS station here.

Here's how you can live stream local election coverage from CBS stations

CBS Stations will broadcast the election live in its 14 owned markets, including the key battleground states of Michigan and Pennsylvania. Local streaming channels will broadcast live continuously beginning in the evenings, utilizing a mix of local and network simulcasts as well as around-the-clock coverage produced by CBS News. The networks will simulcast CBS News broadcasts 24 hours a day, overnight into the morning.

When will the election results be available?

Polling place closing times vary from state to state, with the first states closing at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The results of some states will be available late. For example, polls in California don't close until 11:00 p.m. ET, followed by Hawaii at 12:00 p.m. ET, and finally in Alaska at 1:00 a.m. ET.

At what point are the election winners predicted?

It is unknown when the winner of the presidential election will be announced. In states with narrow margins, it will be difficult to make a forecast based on preliminary results. Rules for processing and counting mail-in ballots, which vary from state to state, can lead to slow results in some states.

In the 2020 election, election day was November 3rd, but there were not enough votes until November 7th in Pennsylvania The major news networks assumed that Joe Biden would be the winner.

The 2016 race was forecast faster, with Trump projected to win around 3 a.m. ET.

Notably, in the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, the race was not decided until December, after a legal battle over a recount in Florida went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
