It's Election Day and voters are wondering when the earliest Iowa election results will be available.

Voting laws vary by state. This may impact when states report results on election night. In some states, processing of out-of-office messages cannot begin until Election Day, such as Wisconsin or Pennsylvania.

So what kind of results can Iowa voters expect on Election Day?

When can election officials in Iowa start counting mail-in ballots?

Postal voting can begin the day before election day. This allows county auditors to review absentee voters' affidavits on their sealed envelopes.

Ballots will be run through voting machines on Election Day and tabulated after polls close at 8:00 p.m

Early voting data from auditors' offices only records how many people voted, not how they voted.

Iowans could find out the unofficial presidential and local election results before they go to bed Tuesday night.

Results reported by local auditors and the Secretary of State are considered unofficial. The results will not be officially announced until they are confirmed by the district and state committees in the coming weeks.

The Polk County Auditor's Office expected unofficial election results to be available before 10 p.m. on Election Day. Black Hawk and Linn County said results from the registry will be available no later than 11 p.m

“We know Iowans are eager to see the results and local election officials are doing their best to report results quickly and accurately,” Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said in a statement. “Our goal is to get the right results, and while we try to achieve this as quickly as possible, we value accuracy over speed.”
