When do polling stations open and close on Election Day 2024? Things to know for Tuesday

Millions of Americans will vote in person Election 2024 on Tuesday, November 5th. Check polling place opening and closing times, as hours vary by state and 15 states have areas that fall into two different time zones. States will begin releasing election results as soon as their polling stations close.

Forty-seven states and the District of Columbia Offer some form of early votingand eight states and DC allow a mail-in voting system nationwide. More than 78 million voters cast their ballots earlier this year.

When will the first polling stations open on Election Day 2024?

The first polls are open on the East Coast in Vermont, where certain locations (but not all) open at 5 a.m. ET. Polls in all or parts of five additional states open at 6 a.m. ET. A complete list can be found below.

Here's what time polls will be open in each state on Election Day:

Oregon is a mail-in voting state and therefore does not have in-person polling locations.

As early as 5 a.m. ET

  • Vermont (Polls are open between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. depending on the city. See when your polling location opens here.)

  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky (Polls in the West open at 7 a.m. ET)
  • Maine (Polls are open 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. depending on city population. Check here)

6:30 a.m. ET

  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • West Virginia

7 a.m. ET

  • Alabama
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Florida (8 a.m. ET in parts of the Florida Panhandle Central Time)

  • New Hampshire (hours vary by county, earliest start is 7 a.m. ET; see here)

When will the first polling stations close on Election Day 2024?

The first polls on the East Coast close in the eastern counties of Indiana and Kentucky at 6:00 p.m. ET, then the remaining states plus Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia close at 7:00 p.m. ET. A full list of scheduled poll closing times can be found below.
