What you should know before today's vote

Michigan's general election takes place today, Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Here's what you should know before voting in the general election:

What time do polls open and close in Michigan?

In-person voting will be available in every jurisdiction. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m

Can I still register to vote?

You can register at your city or town office any time until 8 p.m. on election day.

Where do I vote in Michigan?

The Michigan Voter Information Center can help you determine whether you are eligible to vote, where to vote on Election Day, and where your local office is. Registered Michigan voters who moved within 60 days of the election may continue to vote at their previous address if they have not registered to vote at their new address by the end of registration for that election.

Do I need my voter ID to vote?

NO. As long as you are at the correct polling place, your name will appear on the registration list sent to your precinct. The voter ID card is for reference and is not required for voting. If you did not receive your voter ID card or lost it, call or visit your local clerk for a replacement Michigan Voter Information Center to check your registration status.

Do I need ID to vote?

You will be asked to show ID upon check-in to vote. If you don't have one yet, you can still vote.

If this happens, you should expect a poll worker to ask you to sign a form explaining that you did not have ID before you vote. Your ballot will be cast and counted along with all others.

You can use the following ID types for check-in:

  • Michigan driver's license or state ID card (may be expired)

  • Driver's license or state ID card issued by another state

  • Photo ID issued by the federal, state or local government

  • US passport

  • Military photo ID

  • Photo ID from an educational institution

  • Tribal photo ID

Can I wear election-related clothing to the polls?

Michigan has banned the practice of displaying election-related materials at elections for decades. This includes clothing and buttons as well as materials such as brochures, flyers and stickers. You may not display such items at the polling place or within 100 feet of the entrance to a polling place. If you go to vote wearing a T-shirt or button with election-related images or slogans, you will be asked to cover or remove them.

Where can I drop off a mail-in ballot on Election Day?

Your completed mail-in ballot should be received by your city or town clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. You can deliver the ballot in person to your clerk's office or drop it in their mailbox.

What happens if I have an emergency on Election Day?

If an emergency, such as a sudden illness or family death, prevents you from voting on Election Day, you can request an emergency absentee ballot.

Requests for an emergency ballot must be submitted after the deadline for regular absentee voting but before 4:00 p.m. on Election Day.

The emergency must have occurred at a time that made it impossible for you to request a regular absentee ballot. Please contact your local clerk for more information about emergency absentee ballots.

I cast my ballot. Can I change my vote?

If a voter has already voted by absentee ballot and wishes to change their vote (because the candidate has dropped out of the race or for another reason), a voter may falsify their ballot by submitting a written request to the city or town clerk.

  • The voter must sign the application and indicate whether they would like to receive a new mail-in ballot in the mail or whether they would like to pick it up in person at the voter's office.

  • This request must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the second Friday before the election, when the mail-in ballot has been returned to the clerk's office. There is no way to tamper with a mail-in ballot that has been received by the clerk during the mandatory early voting period or on an Election Day.

  • A mail-in ballot that has not been returned to the election official may be voided in person at the election official's office by 4 p.m. on the Monday before the election.

  • If a voter has not returned their ballot, they may cast the ballot or sign a statement saying the ballot was lost or destroyed and vote in person at an early voting location or on Election Day.
