What Jerod Mayo and Bill Belichick say after another loss

What Jerod Mayo and Bill Belichick say after another loss

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo will address the media after his team's seventh loss, a 20-17 overtime decision to the struggling Titans. Now 2-7, New England sits in first place in the current 2025 NFL Draft standings and faces one of the toughest remaining schedules in the league.

“We never want to lose games. “I feel like crap right now,” Mayo said Sunday. “So it’s difficult, at least for me, to really get anything positive out of it.”

On Sunday, Mayo was effusive in his praise for rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who led the Patriots on a game-winning drive and used his legs to add nearly 12 seconds to the final play before forcing overtime. Maye went 29 for 41 for 206 yards and a touchdown, plus another 95 yards on the ground after spending the week going through the NFL's concussion protocol.

We'll stay tuned to what Mayo says and what the national media is saying about the Patriots. Here's what's next.

  • Mayo spoke to the media at 9 a.m., followed by an appearance on WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show.”
  • Bill Belichick will join ESPN's “Pat McAfee Show” around noon to talk NFL. He will also join the Manningcast broadcast of Monday Night Football tonight.
  • Players will be available at 4 p.m. Check back to read what they say.

What Jerod Mayo said in his media availability

Mayo began the morning with a video press conference. Here are the highlights.

His thoughts on the game: “It was a disappointment to go back and watch the film and just see plays that were missed on the field. I always say it's not just one piece. Everyone will either get stuck in the interception at the end of the game or go here (for two) or not (for two). These are definitely the things I think about a lot in retrospect. … I'm very proud of how the locker room pulled together. It was always a fight when we went into overtime away from home like that. It takes a lot, and I would say it takes a lot, especially when you lose the game. Proud of the way the boys showed some toughness.”

Why he chose a different offensive line combination: “I thought it was best for the team. They have a good front. (Jeffery Simmons) is definitely a problem. I thought it was just the best thing for our offense.”

On his assessment of Maye: “I feel like Drake has been trained hard his whole life, and that started in the household with his brothers and parents, and even in Carolina he was trained hard, and we train him hard here, just like we train everyone else. “. And when I say that, I think you've nailed it: there will be growing pains. That’s part of being a rookie, regardless of the position.”

Why, in retrospect, it might have been better to play with two people to complete the game: “Because we lost the game. It's that simple: Because we lost the game. Coming back earlier in the season, we chose two. We didn't understand it. You will be criticized. And then you kick the (extra point) here and get criticized. That's why I will always do what I think is best for the team. And I think, you know, we can talk about analytics and all these things that we use, but at the same time there's a flow to the game, and as a head coach, ultimately the decision and the consequence is hers.”

On the script: “Throughout the season our screens definitely didn't give us the mileage we all hoped for. We have to keep working on that. I would say it's just a matter of timing. When it comes to screens, the most important thing is timing. When a screen is brought up, it makes it look like something. There are many factors that play a role in the execution of the screen. It’s hard to implement and we just have to keep practicing.”

On Maye: “Let’s just start with his personality. I think I've said this before, his balanced approach to everything. And when I say that, I'm happy for him. I'm happy for a lot of our young guys and I would say as a group that these guys need to continue to go through the ups and downs together and hopefully that builds the resilience of the team. But as far as Drake is concerned, I’m excited about his continued growth.”

On Christian Barmore's progress: “We’re getting closer.”
