The Los Angeles Dodgers are on the verge of the World Series after taking a commanding 3-1 lead over the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series. The Mets have one more home game left to keep their season alive after the Dodgers scored 18 runs the last two nights at Citi Field.

So the stakes for Game 5 on Friday appear to be very high, just as baseball is supposed to be in October.

The Dodgers had the best record in the majors this year for the third time in five seasons and have largely looked that way so far in the postseason. Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Max Muncy and Co. have led a lineup that has overwhelmed the Mets' pitching staff, and the Dodgers' starters and bullpen have largely kept New York in check when it matters most. The Mets have a record of 4-29 (.138) with runners in scoring position heading into Game 5.

Los Angeles has just one World Series and three World Series appearances in its recent elite streak, but this group is now ready to give the Dodgers another shot at a title. The Mets need to save this homestand and bring the NLCS back to Dodger Stadium or this season's otherwise exciting revival will be over. Just a few days ago, this may have seemed like a team of destiny. Maybe it can still be.

Friday's starters are expected to be Mets left-hander David Peterson and Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty.
