Vanderbilt vs. Texas score, week 9 game highlights

Vanderbilt vs. Texas score, week 9 game highlights

Vanderbilt's three-game winning streak is over. However, a bowl is still a possibility after a 27-24 loss to Texas at FirstBank Stadium.

Vanderbilt (5-3, 2-2 in the SEC) likely saw its hopes of a playoff bid dashed with the loss. The Commodores had captured the nation's attention after defeating Alabama 40-35 on Oct. 5 earlier in the month.

But even with the defeat, bowling is still possible.

Vanderbilt scored first in the first quarter on an 18-yard TD run by Diego Pavia. But Texas countered with three straight touchdowns before Brock Taylor's 54-yard field goal at the end of the half cut the deficit to 21-10.

Vanderbilt finally cut Texas' lead to 24-17 with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter on Pavia's 3-yard TD pass to Junior Sherrill. But a Pavia interception led to a late Texas field goal.

Pavia led Vanderbilt down the field for one final score, a short TD pass to Eli Stowers. But Texas recovered the onside kick, making it 27-24 for Texas.

Quinn Ewers led Texas with 288 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Pavia was 16 of 29 passing for 143 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Vanderbilt's drive late in the fourth quarter ended with a Diego Pavia interception on fourth-and-2 from the Vandy 35-yard line, which may have ended any hope of an upset in Vanderbilt football. It was Pavia's second interception of the game.
