Vance Joseph's masterclass fuels Broncos' win over New York Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Defense Travel.

Denver's defense has been on the move a lot over the last 10 days.

From Denver to Florida and West Virginia to New Jersey.

And now back on the Front Range, with a road sweeper in the bag after a second straight dominant performance led to a second straight upset win on the East Coast, this time a 10-9 masterclass from Vance Joseph over the New York Jets .

“I thought Vance had a great game, like he has all year,” inside linebacker Justin Strnad said after his first start of the season. “He prepared us so well for this game and I can’t thank him enough.”

Joseph's group was on fire from the first game, coming through almost every time Denver needed it on a rainy, offensively challenged afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Strnad came free and recorded the first of five sacks on the first play of the game against future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. That drive ended in a turnover when safety Brandon Jones fended off the ball after a short completion by receiver Garrett Wilson.

Neither team recorded a first down until the second quarter, but the Broncos' defense gained a crucial advantage on big plays that helped swing the field position in their favor. They sacked Rodgers three times in the first half and two more in the fourth quarter while protecting a 10-9 lead.

The last part of the quintet was the largest.

Joseph battled with Rodgers from the sideline on the Jets' second-to-last drive, beating him on the first two plays after the two-minute warning – both were incomplete – before showing pressure but only getting it four times on third-and-10.

Rodgers got out of rhythm and threw another incompletion throw.
