UFC Fight Night Edmonton takes a last-minute hit and loses the main event

The UFC Fight Night Edmonton card still looks good, but lost some of its star power on Friday night. Heavyweight star Derrick Lewis was forced to pull out of his fight with Jhonata Diniz due to an illness unrelated to weight loss, according to the UFC.

The issue occurred too close to Saturday's event, meaning the UFC didn't have time to find a replacement for Lewis. As it stands, unless Lewis' issues are so severe that they keep him out of action for an extended period of time, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the fight added to an upcoming show – perhaps even UFC 309 on Nov. 16 Madison Square Garden.

Best wishes go to Lewis regarding his health issue. Also, Diniz is unlucky. The promising Brazilian heavyweight was about to have the best chance of his professional MMA career.

The undefeated 33-year-old is 8-0. Diniz is not ranked, but a win over No. 11 Lewis would have put him in the top 15 in the division. Diniz is 3-0 in the UFC, including the first-round knockout win over Eduardo Neves in September 2023 on the Dana White Contender Series that earned him a contract.

After fighting his way onto the roster, Diniz knocked out Austen Lane in April and won a unanimous decision over Karl Williams in August. If Diniz adds another fight before the end of the year, there is still a path into the top 15.

As for Lewis, the 39-year-old was aiming for his second win in a row. Lewis knocked out Rodrigo Nascimento in May and a win over Diniz might have given him a slight edge had he won convincingly.

There was no indication of the nature of Lewis' illness. However, he reportedly weighed 266 pounds but didn't make it to the actual weigh-ins on Friday.

Lewis made headlines earlier this week when he revealed some issues he had with his former opponent, UFC commentator and former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Lewis contradicted something Cormier said about him, calling him a “piece of s###” on The Ariel Helwani Show. Cormier said he thinks Lewis had a problem with him proposing retirement in 2023 after a three-fight losing streak. Cormier will be a commentator for Saturday's show.
