Turnovers worry Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks in their 26-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams

Turnovers worry Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks in their 26-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams

SEATTLE, Wash. – After a disastrous collapse, Geno Smith threw two interceptions in the red zone in the fourth quarter and the Seattle Seahawks allowed a long walk-off touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Demarcus Robinson in overtime when they suffered an abdominal injury . Shocking 26-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

As the Seahawks' starter, Smith endured arguably his worst start in three seasons. He was picked off three times but completed just 61 percent of his pass attempts despite throwing for three touchdowns and 363 yards to keep the team in the game. Out of the backfield, Ken Walker III rushed 25 times for 83 yards and added 24 yards on three catches, while Riq Woolen sparked the defense with his second interception of the season.

After the Seahawks lost an unspeakable fourth straight game at home and fell to last place in the NFC West, here are five quick takeaways from the Seahawks' latest missed opportunity at Lumen Field:

Heading into the locker room red-hot, Smith closed the second quarter with a flurry, capitalizing on two free plays with offsides penalties with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Lockett on a go route and a 47-yard connection with Smith-Njigba on a route in a deep corner. The final play set up a 24-yard touchdown for Smith-Njigba, who narrowly missed six points on the previous play and opened a crosser in the end zone. At that point, the Seahawks had built a 10-point lead, averaging more than 11 yards per attempt thanks to those explosive completions.

Although Smith made several excellent throws on Sunday afternoon, those plays will unfortunately not be remembered due to two inexplicable errors in the red zone in the fourth quarter. With the Seahawks lining up at the Rams' six-yard line early in the fourth quarter, the veteran quarterback made the stunning decision to run the ball right to safety and Kamren Kinchens threw the ball right in Safety who returned the interception 106 yards for a touchdown. Two series later, after Cody White blocked a punt to give Seattle excellent field position, he was picked off again by Kinchens inside the 10-yard line as he attempted to squeeze a ball to tight end AJ Barner. Aside from giving Los Angeles seven points, the two turnovers erased at least six Seattle points from the game and helped the visitors steal the game.

With a clear focus on the ground game, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb engaged Ken Walker III early and often, handing him the ball five times on the team's first possession while also snagging an 18-yard reception. However, those efforts bore no fruit on the scoreboard, and as the first half progressed, running room became increasingly difficult for Walker and Zach Charbonnet, as they averaged just 3.2 yards per carry on 14 combined carries in the first half . Of course, it also had something to do with being forced to pass without a timeout in a two-minute offense late in the first half.

But even in the second half and overtime, when Walker made a few nice runs along the way, he still averaged just 3.3 yards per carry on 25 carries, with the Rams making regular plays at the line of scrimmage Chasing air and ready to fend him off the edge when he bounces, runs. Especially with the Seahawks needing a yard to move the chains on fourth down in overtime, the star back had no room to maneuver as multiple defenders swarmed him on an off-tackle run, turning the ball over on downs and him the keys passed to Stafford orchestrated a game-winning drive. There was certainly progress on Sunday, but not nearly enough if Seattle wants to win against quality opponents.

After being acquired from the Titans last week, Jones had just two practices under his belt, but in his first start with the Seahawks, he was on the spot in a loss to the Bills, trying to come up with a new scheme and language on the fly learn. But even after missing Friday's practice with neck soreness, the veteran linebacker looked far more comfortable in his new surroundings when facing his former team and particularly excelled in the running game, which contributed to the Rams' fewer than 70 rushing yards and less than three yards had yards per carry.

At a crucial turning point in the game, after Los Angeles had driven the ball to Seattle's one-yard line, Jones promptly fended off a diving run by Kyren Williams, darted into the backfield and set up his former teammate for a two-yard score -Loss. One incompletion later, the Rams had to settle for a field goal, leaving the score tied when it looked like the away team would take the lead. The veteran linebacker finished the game with nine tackles, three run stops of three or fewer yards and a pass breakup that nearly resulted in an interception after a tipped pass, which stood out as a clear bright spot in a loss.

Statistically, Stafford managed nearly 300 passing yards and wasn't sacked once all afternoon, so the Seahawks still have some things to iron out with limiting blocking on chunk plays and finishing rushes at the top. But they held the Gunslinger to fewer than seven yards per attempt and a sub-60 percent completion rate, regularly gathering enough heat from the defensive line to force him to throw more quickly than he wanted. In the first half, Leonard Williams and Dre'Mont Jones each hit him twice, while the Rams punted four times and several other rushed third-down incompletions came under pressure.

In the end, all of Seattle's young cornerbacks contributed to Los Angeles only having 13 points in regulation. Late in the second quarter, Woolen turned a turnover into points by pouncing a pass intended for Puka Nacua down the sideline, hauling him in for his second pick of the season and setting up Smith's touchdown pass to Smith-Njigba before halftime. On one of the earlier drives that ended in a punt, Josh Jobe was playing sticky coverage against Nacua and extended his arm in front of the receiver to break up a pass. Continuing to play well at safety in place of Rayshawn Jenkins, Coby Bryant's third down pass deflection after Jones' tackle forced the Rams to wait for a field goal, and the third-year defender also scored a game-winning goal to getting rid of the ball from Robinson, who teamed up with Devon Witherspoon on third down late in regulation time.

The Seahawks came out of the break with a 10-point lead and had multiple chances to get off the field on two defensive drives in the third quarter, but the flags gave the Rams more extra life than a cat. At the 9:03 mark, with Los Angeles having reached the Seattle 15-yard line and facing 2nd-and-15, Jobe ran afoul of Cooper Kupp on a slant route and made a last-second grab Receiver's leg, resulting in a defensive pass interference penalty, which would have been an incompletion. Stafford set up inside the five-yard line and hit Robinson two plays later for a one-yard score to cut Seattle's lead to three points.

On the ensuing possession, after a lost Seattle drive in which a 40-yard catch by Smith-Njigba was negated by a holding penalty on tackle Mike Jerrell, Woolen was cited for a defensive incompletion on a 3rd-and-8 intended for Colby Parkinson Keep warned the Rams will have another string of defeats. Moments later, Derick Hall hit Stafford while the quarterback was away, resulting in a questionable roughing the passer penalty that further extended the drive with a first down penalty. Los Angeles only kicked a field goal on that drive, but three key defensive penalties caused two possession losses that turned the game in the away team's favor, continuing the ugly trend of Seattle playing undisciplined football that doesn't lead to winning games in NFL.
