Tracking severe weather potential

Tracking severe weather potential

Heavy storms and all dangers are expected this afternoon and evening.

The greatest instability is in the central and southwestern Texas Panhandle and parts of eastern New Mexico.

The biggest threats are chalk-sized hail, winds of 60 mph, and flooding. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of a tornado or two.

A low danger has been issued extending from Tucumcari down to Portales in eastern New Mexico and from Friona up to Amarillo and includes Dumas, Borger, Pampa and the Clarendon-Silverton border.

This is where we will probably experience the strongest storms.

A flood warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 a.m. CDT Sunday for Dallam-Sherman-Hansford-Ochiltree-Hartley-Moore-Hutchinson-Roberts-Oldham-Potter-Carson-Gray-Deaf Smith-Randall-Armstrong-Donley counties in the Texas Panhandle and from noon to 6 a.m. MDT Sunday for Union-Quay-Curry counties.

We'll be monitoring this throughout the day, so make sure you have a way to receive any severe weather alerts.

It all depends on how quickly the cold front moves across the area. But we have to be careful if these storms get stuck on that boundary.

Once the front has passed, the atmosphere should stabilize somewhat and the serious threat should slowly subside.

Stay weather ready!
