ForbesToday's word number 1208 with tips, hints and answers for Wednesday, October 9th

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I picked up a puzzle Harry Potter Series to give all good puzzle solvers an extra challenge, like I do every Wednesday. Today I will reveal the answer. That was the puzzle:

“Think first of the person who lives in disguise,

He who trades in secrets and tells nothing but lies,

Next tell me whatever is the last thing that needs fixing,

The middle of the middle and the end of the end?

And finally give me the often heard sound,

When searching for a hard to find word.

Now line them up and answer me:

What creature wouldn’t you want to kiss?”

The answer – which some of you guessed correctly – is: a Spider! I'm as big a fan of spiders as Indiana Jones is of snakes.

I like Wordles much more. Let's solve today's problem!

Can you solve today's sentence?

Well, luckily that wasn't as difficult as yesterday's Wordle. I was lucky, despite my big mistake today. STARE was a strong opening tip that left me with two yellow words and one green word and only eight words left. I felt the season and when I thought of GRAVE – so appropriate for Halloween being so close – I went for it, even though it stupidly reused the “A” in the same yellow box. Oops! Luckily for me, this still shrank my remaining possible solutions down to just one, and oddly enough, that feels appropriate for Halloween and Thanksgiving too: CARVE for the win!

I get 1 point for guessing in three tries and lose it immediately because the Wordle Bot guessed in only two tries today. Crap!

Today's Wordle etymology

The word carve comes from Old English ceorfanwhich means “to cut out, cut out or engrave.” This in turn comes from Proto-Germanic kerbanąwhich means “to cut or split.” The word is related to similar terms in other Germanic languages, such as Old Norse karfa (carve) and Old High German Kerban (cut). The root also has connections to Proto-Indo-European gerbh- means “to scratch or carve.” Over time, carve represents the process of precise shaping or cutting, especially in wood, stone or flesh.
