Three keys to the Vikings' 31-29 victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field

Three keys to the Vikings' 31-29 victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field

Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr.

The Vikings' offense stalled in the second half, and although Packers quarterback Jordan Love was under pressure, he found a rhythm in the fourth quarter. After the Vikings took a 31-22 lead with 6 minutes and 50 minutes left, Love went to work in the Vikings secondary. He hit Dontayvion Wicks to Murphy, giving the Vikings a 36-yard gain to 34 yards. On the next play, with Harrison Smith rushing toward him unblocked, Love threw a throw deep to Wicks in the end zone, but Murphy dove in to intercept it. The Vikings went three out and needed less than two minutes. So with 4:31 left, the Packers had the ball again at their own 37 line. On the second play of the drive, Murphy knocked the ball off tight end Tucker Kraft and the fumble was recovered by safety Camryn Bynum. The Vikings didn't score on this turnover either, but at the time of play keeping the Packers off the field was paramount.

The Vikings' only goal in the second half

Suddenly, thanks to a fumble by Sam Darnold, the Packers had gotten within 28-22 with two touchdowns in 27 seconds in the fourth quarter. After throwing three TD passes in the first half, Darnold had two turnovers in the second half, but coach Kevin O'Connell was aggressive and didn't hesitate to put the game in the quarterback's hands. O'Connell caught four straight pass plays and gained 50 yards. Darnold made smart decisions in the red zone when plays fell through, leading to rookie Will Reichard's 33-yard field goal and a crucial two-point lead. (It's also worth noting that Packers' rookie kicker Brayden Narveson missed two momentum-killing field goal attempts in the first half.) .

Not only are the Vikings undefeated, they are barely behind this season. The Vikings outscored their opponents 38-3 in the first quarter, one of many statistics that represents a reversal from last year. The Vikings got off to a slow start in the 2023 season, scoring just 40 points in the first quarter. They didn't score a touchdown in the first quarter until Week 7. They haven't allowed a first quarter touchdown in four games this year after falling 69-40 in the first frame last season.
