The status of the Utah QB compared to Arizona

The status of the Utah QB compared to Arizona

According to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, Utah quarterback Cam Rising will be a game-time decision before the Utes' matchup against Arizona on Saturday night.

Rising missed the last two games after suffering an injury to his throwing hand when he collided with a water cooler on the sideline during Utah's win over Baylor on Sept. 7.

Utah coaches will put Rising through the same evaluation scheme he went through last week before the team's game against Oklahoma State.

The process involves Rising throwing the football during pregame warmups to assess how much power and accuracy he can handle before making a decision about whether he can play.

Utah may opt to take a cautious approach with Rising, preferring to sit him out this week to give him additional time to rest since the team has an open weekend before playing at Arizona State on Oct. 11.

Rising participated in practice in Utah this week, but did so on a limited basis as the team decided to give him more rest.

Isaac Wilson started at quarterback for Utah in Rising's place in the last two games, both victories, including a key road win at then-No. 14 Oklahoma State that could have Big 12 title implications.

Wilson threw three touchdown passes in a win against Utah State, and he scored two more times while passing for 207 yards and throwing two interceptions against the Cowboys.

Rising threw for 254 yards and 5 touchdown passes in the season opener at Utah and added 92 yards and 2 scoring plays against Baylor before leaving the game with the injury.

The veteran quarterback has posted 5,918 career passing yards and 53 touchdowns while helping lead Utah to back-to-back Pac-12 championships.

Rising, a seventh-grader, missed the entire 2023 football season as he recovered from a serious knee injury suffered during the Utes' appearance in the Rose Bowl game.

His return to Utah this season was a major factor in the team becoming one of the favorites to compete for the conference title in the expanded Big 12.
