The Raiders are already recycling another bad idea after firing offensive coaches

The Raiders are already recycling another bad idea after firing offensive coaches

Nobody here wants to be addicted to old age. Age really is just a number and we want to applaud anyone who finds ways to do what they love for as long as they want. But still, there's something to the latest rumors coming out of Las Vegas that…well, we just can't help but laugh (or keep laughing) at the Raiders.

In case you missed the latest Raiders updates, the team decided to fire several offensive coaches after another loss in Week 9. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was also on the list, and each coach was hired before the season began, meaning no one had more than half an hour. season to do his job. In total, three coaches were fired, and head coach Antonio Pierce said it was his decision.

So where will the Raiders turn for their offensive leadership? For news, we turn to NFL reporter Jonathan Jones:

Yes, that's Norv Turner in case something went wrong with the post embedded above. If this makes you shake your head in surprise, you are not alone. Turner hasn't coached in the NFL (or anywhere else) since 2019. Yes, that was before COVID.

Now, Turner isn't going to be a head coach or anything like that, and other teams have hired older coaches as consultants before, so that in itself isn't a big deal. But the Raiders' move shows they believe there is still something left to salvage this season in which they are clearly bottom of the division. And that's strange.

Deon Yelder and Morris Claiborne were members of the Chiefs when Norv Turner was still in the league. Turner was the former head coach of the Raiders back in 2004 and spent time as head coach of the LA Chargers from 2007 to 2012. During that time, Turner's offensive players finished in the top 10 in the NFL seven times.

The NFL's recycling prospects are impressive, to say the least. Instead of taking the time to identify diverse candidates and solidify a long-term strategy, the Raiders continue to flip over the next piece on the board – even if it's a holdover from a previous game. Josh McDaniels was a retreat that made way for an interim who is now laying off his staff – perhaps because the job is too big for him.

Look, no team knows better the value of thoughtfully gaining experience on the sidelines. The Chiefs chose Andy Reid after he was traded from Philadelphia and they are the team of the day. But there's a difference between a still-successful leader of men in need of a change of scenery and one who began his coaching career as an assistant the year the Vietnam War officially ended.

But hey, we're here no matter how the Raiders want to fail, and if that's what they want with Norv Turner, we're for it. At least he will be able to rely on him to handle everything first hand.
