The Patriots coach also made a rookie mistake in the Titans' loss

Drake Maye wasn't the only member of the Patriots to make a rookie mistake in Nashville.

Trailing 20-17 in overtime, Maye forced a deep ball into double coverage. The pass intended for Kayshon Boutte was easily underthrown, intercepted by Titans safety Amani Hooker, and the game was over.

“I see the security, I think we're throwing to the wind, I have to step it up a notch. “Just a stupid decision,” complained Maye. “Something you would like to have back, especially in this situation.”

But why threw Maye to the wind?

The Titans won the coin toss in overtime and went for the football. That meant the Patriots had a choice in which direction they wanted to go. Amazingly, they chose to kick into the wind, meaning Maye and company would join in too. On a conference call Monday morning, Jerod Mayo sounded like a first-year head coach as he tried to explain why the Patriots did what they did.

“The wind back then, I would say the wind had changed. The wind had changed from the start of the game to the end of the game,” Mayo said. “So that’s what happened.”

Mayo and his captains couldn't prepare for the coin toss in overtime. Either Mayo didn't notice the changing wind pattern or he failed to communicate it to his players, both of which are to the coach's detriment. It sounds like they simply stuck with New England's pregame coin toss plan.

The wind was significant in the extension and there was ample evidence of this. Beyond the flags on the goalposts and Maye's mid-air interception, old friend Nick Folk – who had trouble with kickoffs during his time with New England – threw a touchback from the back of the end zone in overtime with the wind on his side Page back.

It looks like an unforced error by the Patriots coaching staff that may have proven costly.
