The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees to win the World Series in Game 5

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees to win the 2024 World Series.

The Dodgers won Game 5 and clinched the title with a final score of 7-6 at the Yankees' home stadium at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. This is their eighth World Series championship.

It is the first World Series victory for the Dodgers' star pitcher. Shohei Ohtani. Meanwhile, the team made history by becoming the first team to win professional baseball's top title after a deficit of five or more runs.

“We're obviously resilient, but there's so much love in this clubhouse that won this game today,” Dodgers outfielder said Mookie Betts said after Wednesday's showdown: per MLB.com. “That was it. It was love. It was sand. It was just a beautiful thing. I’m just proud of us and just happy for us.”

While Los Angeles crossed its fingers and hoped for the best, the Yankees – back in the World Series for the first time since 2009 – were no match for their West Coast rivals, including the Dodgers. Freddie Freemanwho was named MVP of the series. Freeman, 35, hit four home runs in his team's first four games against the Yankees and scored 12 runs in five games to break a World Series record set by the former Yankee Bobby Richardson circa 1960.

“That’s it,” Freeman said on the field in a postgame interview. “I'm telling you, without the support of everyone in (Dodgers) jerseys tonight, I wouldn't be here.”

He downplayed his individual award and pointed to the Dodgers' collective trophy and said, “That's what it's all about!”

“Every spring training is our goal,” Freeman added about winning the series. “And to make it come true, with this group of guys, I couldn't have asked for a better year. Holy cow.”

Before the first pitch of the evening, Freeman's wife, ChelseaShe took to Instagram and posted a photo of herself with her son Charlie, 8, in the stands. In another snap, she showed off the back of her black leather jacket, which was decorated with images of her husband and the word “Freeman” in bright Dodger blue. “Game 5! Here we go,” she captioned the post.

The ballplayer was a standout from the start of the World Series. In the first game between the Dodgers and Yankees on Friday, October 25, he hit a grand slam to win the game. After the walk-off grand slam, Freeman ran to Chelsea and they hugged for a loving moment on the side of the pitch.

It was a high point in the couple's life after a tough year, which included battling the health of their three-year-old son Max. In July, Chelsea took Max to the hospital after he was unable to stand or walk. Eventually he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. (Freeman and Chelsea are also parents to Brandon, 3.)

Weeks before the Dodgers took part in the Fall Classic, Freeman spoke about the pair's “busy” year.

“Every day it’s a mental strain,” he said The New York Times. “I'm mentally exhausted. It's not just about (Max) getting better. There's so much more to something like this. I could tell you that I need more than three days. I could probably tell you it would take me the rest of my life to (reset).”
