The Lions demote Mekhi Wingo and Sione Vaki to OUT for the Packers game

The Detroit Lions adjusted the playing status of rookies Mekhi Wingo and Sione Vaki in Week 9, downgrading them from doubtful to OUT, and the pair will not travel with the team to Green Bay.

Wingo appeared to have injured his ankle during practice on Thursday and while he worked with trainers on Friday, he will not play on Sunday, as is common with most midweek injuries. Wingo has seen his snaps increase recently as the Lions have struggled with injuries along their defensive line, and he saw opportunities on both the inside and at the 5-technique on the perimeter.

With Wingo unavailable and Levi Onwuzurike getting more offense at the rim, the Lions signed center back Chris Smith to the active roster for more depth. While Smith is more of an interior presence, it's worth noting that Pat O'Connor has similar range to Wingo and could expand his responsibilities.

Vaki's week was something of a roller coaster ride in terms of attendance. After being unable to train on Wednesday due to a knee injury, he trained fully on Thursday only to be unavailable again on Friday.

Although Vaki hasn't seen many running back snaps lately, he has played a big role on special teams and was the Lions' second-highest scoring special teams player last week, according to PFF – behind only Kalif Raymond. Vaki is a four-phase special teams player and his contributions will be difficult to replace, but the Lions could turn to UDFA rookie Loren Strickland, who is usually a healthy backup on game days. Strickland is a solid special teams contributor and should be able to fill Vaki's roles on special teams.
