For the second time this decade, the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series champions.

The Dodgers fought back from a five-run deficit to win Game 5 of the Fall Classic 7-6 against the New York Yankees, winning the eighth title in franchise history.

Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm battled it out in the first inning, and by the fourth inning New York had a 5-0 lead. However, their biggest problem, poor defense, would come back to haunt them.

In the fifth inning, Judge dropped a routine line drive. Then Chisholm couldn't handle a short throw to third. After that, Gerrit Cole no longer covered first base, which should have been the third out, but an RBI single. The Dodgers saw their chance and pounced as Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez each drove in two runs to tie the game at five.

New York regained the lead in the sixth period, but they were given another chance in the eighth period. LA loaded the bases before recording an out against Tommy Kahnle, which prompted Aaron Boone to single with closer Luke Weaver. However, Gavin Lux tied the game with a sac fly, and then Shohei Ohtani reached base on a catcher's interference to load the bases again. The next batter, Mookie Betts, hit a sac fly, giving the Dodgers a 7-6 lead.

New York had runners on first and second, with one out in the bottom half, but Giancarlo Stanton came out and Anthony Rizzo struck out to end the threat while closer Blake Treinen pitched 2.1 scoreless innings completed.

Walker Buehler came on for the save and was without Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo to defend the title. He joked after the game that he wished he was in better shape to keep his heart rate down.

“What a moment for our team,” Treinen told FOX’s Tom Verducci.

The Yankees were looking to become the first team to ever overcome a 3-0 Game 6 deficit in a series – only three other games had even gone five games. In fact, you could argue that the Yankees win this series 3-2 if they play clean defense. However, only the Dodgers will be flying back to Los Angeles for their World Series parade.

“A lot of people excluded us … but these guys believed in each other,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Now they are world champions.”

It's Shohei Ohtani's first championship in his first-ever trip to the postseason.

For Betts it is his third. Betts won two with the Dodgers and the other with the Boston Red Sox. Freeman got his second. Clayton Kershaw also receives a second ring despite a shortened season due to injury.

The Dodgers won the World Series in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but this is their first full-season title since 1988. Treinen took a subtle attack on those who discredit that title, but said that the guys on this team 2020 can still feel some relief.

“There were a lot of people who wanted to discredit 2020, and I don't want to stress that too much, but it's so great to see that the guys who were still here from back then were finally able to silence the critics from back then .”

They were the favorites of spring training, and now it all makes sense why.
