The benches are clear after the exchange between Anthony Volpe of the Yankees and Maikel Garcia of the Royals in ALDS Game 4

In Game 4 of the American League Division Series, tempers heated up and the benches were cleared after the Kansas City Royals' Maikel Garcia attacked a hit by New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe on a double play in the sixth inning.

The Yankees were leading 3-0 when Michael Massey bounced a grounder to first baseman Jon Berti, who stepped on the bag and shot to Volpe, who was covering the second baseman. Garcia slipped late and Volpe tagged him in front of the bag, then again after Garcia slipped past the base. Garcia stared at Volpe, who patted Garcia on the chest and back. By this point, Jazz Chisholm Jr. had come over and gotten Garcia's attention, and the temperature was at full blast.

Yankees starter Gerrit Cole stomped over, drawing a dirty look but nothing more, and both the benches and bullpens were emptied.

No expulsions were issued.

“Volpe had the ball and blocked the sack,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(Garcia) probably didn’t like it that much, and it got a little grueling.”

Garcia said he slipped late, hoping to get in the way of the ball.

“I have nothing against him,” Garcia said of Chisholm through club interpreter Luis Perez. “I just saw him say something. I don't know what he said. I just saw he did it.”

Chisholm, who was booed by Royals fans in Game 3, said Wednesday that he enjoys trolling.

“Yeah. 100 percent. It's for me,” he said. “Like I said, it's nobody – if I wasn't a player they cared about or something like that, they wouldn't be standing out there booing . They just let me do my thing. But obviously I reached a lot of people, right?”
