According to the National Hurricane Center, the situation in the Atlantic Ocean is calm for now, but that could change later this week.

The hurricane center said Monday that a “large low pressure area” was likely to develop over the southwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days and that gradual development was possible thereafter.

Meteorologists said a tropical depression could form later this week or over the weekend as the system begins to drift north or northeast over the southwest and central Caribbean Sea.

The NHC gives the system a 40 percent chance of education in the next seven days, Monday's statement said. The next named storms of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be Patty and Rafael.

The NHC also said Monday that it is tracking a low pressure system more than 1,000 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula that is producing “disorganized showers and thunderstorms.”

Meteorologists said that environmental conditions appear to be conducive to gradual development of this system and that “a tropical depression is likely to form within the next few days” as the system moves west or west-northwest over the western part of the eastern Pacific basin.

The hurricane center gives this system a 60 percent chance of forming over the next seven days.

Additionally, the NHC said a low pressure area could form several hundred miles south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula within the next day or two.

Thereafter, slow development of this system is possible as the system slowly moves toward the west-northwest, with a 20 percent chance of the system forming over the next seven days, according to forecasters.
