Before the game

Syracuse wins the toss and shifts. Captains were Trebor Pena, Alijah Clark, Jackson Meeks and Clarence Lewis.

Virginia Tech will be without its starting quarterback and perhaps its star running back.

There aren't too many surprise losses for Syracuse football today. Defensive player Denis Jaquez is probably the most impactful. Third street quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is also unclothed.

On the bright side, wide receiver Yazeed Haynes is here. He is unclothed but received a warm reaction from coaches and teammates. He was not in the team due to a family problem.

Syracuse will play its first home game in more than a month after losing 2-1 in a three-game road stretch.

The Orange (5-2, 2-2 ACC) lost their last game 41-13 to nationally ranked Pittsburgh. It was SU's first lopsided loss of the year. Quarterback Kyle McCord, who was excellent for most of the season, threw five interceptions and the Orange finished the season with a season-low mark.

Virginia Tech (5-3, 3-1) has won three straight games by one rebound after a season that began with playoff aspirations was derailed early by poor nonconference performance. The Hokies' most recent loss was also a good performance, a 38-34 loss to undefeated Miami that required a friendly call from the ACC replay center.

Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech (21-6) in its last game. The Yellow Jackets played without starting quarterback Haynes King. King played well when the Orange fell to Georgia Tech (31-28) earlier this season.

Both teams are averaging just under 31 points per game this season, despite performing significantly differently on offense.

McCord leads the ACC in passing, averaging 354.4 yards per game. Virginia Tech is the conference's No. 2 rushing team behind the league's No. 2 rushing team, Bhayshul Tuten (118.9 yards per game). Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones is adding another 40 yards per game and giving the Hokies multiple threats in the run game.
