Stuttgart vs Atalanta: UEFA Champions League – BBC Sport

Atalanta continued their good start to the season with a deserved Champions League victory in Stuttgart.

The Italians had more possession of the ball in the first half, but the hosts missed their two best chances.

First, Anthony Rouault headed over from close range before former Brighton striker Deniz Undav shot into the side netting after sliding behind the defense.

However, the Serie A side, which secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Napoli on Sunday, started the second half on the front foot and took the lead through Ademola Lookman.

Gian Piero Gasperini's decision to substitute Charles De Ketelaere at half-time paid off as the substitute beat his man before delivering a low cross that Lookman fired into the goal.

Lookman, who scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final last season, has now scored eight goals in 12 games in all competitions this season.

Stuttgart almost hit back immediately, but Ermedin Demirovic missed from a few meters away after cutting across the goal.

The German side increased the pressure but Atalanta secured victory when substitute Nicolo Zaniolo scored on the counterattack.

Atalanta, who are yet to concede a goal in European competition this season, move up to ninth place with eight points after four games, while Stuttgart drop to 25th with four points.

On matchday five, Stuttgart travel to Belgrade to face Crvena Zvezda, while Atalanta travel to Switzerland to face Young Boys.
