The teaser was released during the annual Stranger Things Day in honor of the series' first episode, set on November 6, 1983, titled “The Vanishing of Will Byers.”

Now, season 5 will be set in 1987 and will also feature another “Vanishing of” episode, with the character's name hidden in the teaser. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will premiere in 2025, with special screenings, personal experiences, new limited-edition merchandise and more leading up to the season premiere.

The official synopsis for the show reads: “On November 6, 1983, Will Byers disappeared in Hawkins, Indiana. Long after the city gave up the search, his friends continued searching… and discovered a mysterious girl known only by a number: Eleven. She was alone, hunted, and extremely powerful. Eleven would stop at nothing to help them find their friend. “Stranger Things” is a love letter to the classic genre films of the 80s that fascinated a generation. It centers on a close-knit group of friends and family members who search for answers and find themselves drawn into a risky and deadly series of events. Beneath the surface of their ordinary town lurks an extraordinary supernatural mystery, top-secret government experiments, and a dangerous gate that connects our world to a powerful but sinister empire. Friendships will be tested and lives will be changed, because what they discover will change Hawkins and possibly the world – forever.”

The ensemble cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Joe Keery, Sadie Sink, Finn Wolfhard, Joseph Quinn, Noah Schnapp, Maya Hawke, Jamie Campbell Bower and more. The fifth season also welcomes new cast members Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly and Alex Breaux.

Stranger Things was created by the Duffer Brothers and premiered in July 2016. The series became one of the most popular Netflix television series of all time. The fourth season alone received over 140.7 million views worldwide. The series has received more than 70 awards worldwide, including Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and has been nominated for over 230 awards.

Other projects in the Stranger Things universe include Stranger Things: The First Shadow live on stage in London's West End, coming to Broadway in 2025, and an untitled animated spin-off series

While details about “Stranger Things 5” have been scarce so far, it has been confirmed that two of the eight episodes will be directed by “The Shawshank Redemption” filmmaker Frank Darabont, who was available to work on the final season after 11 years in retirement.

Harbor said during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that the cast “cried uncontrollably” while reading the script for the series finale.

“It's (almost) 10 years later and we're looking at this idea and it's so well done and so beautiful,” he said at the end of the show. “It’s such a great episode and it’s such a great season. You’ll love it.”
