Unless you're dressing up as a Morton Salt Girl or an Umbrella Academy student, it doesn't look like raincoats, galoshes or umbrellas need to be part of your trick-or-treating costume, according to the National Weather Service. Seasonal weather is expected, so you may want to wear a long-sleeved top under your costume or bring a jacket – although it's unlikely to be as cold as last year.

Thursday's highs will be in the mid-60s and lows will be in the low 40s, according to Jordan Didio, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.

The biggest concern will be the weather on Wednesday. Anyone with outdoor decorations should be careful as storms and gusts of wind are expected Wednesday evening.

“We will see a line of thunderstorms moving through the area this evening into the early hours of this morning,” Didio said. “These storms pose a risk for severe weather with wind gusts up to 60 and 70 miles per hour. There is also a risk for some tornadoes, which we will be monitoring throughout the night.”

Didio said the line of storms should move out of the Springfield area in time for Halloween and bring slightly cooler temperatures on Thursday. It should be clear with some breezes up to 5 to 10 mph.

“Enjoy the seasonal weather,” Didio said. “It's been pretty warm the last few days, so it might feel a little chilly, but that's normal for this time of year.”

Play it safe when trick-or-treating

The season may be spooky, but trick-or-treating doesn't have to be. The American Red Cross offers these tips to keep children safe this Halloween:

  • Opt for face paint instead of masks, which can obscure the wearer's vision. To ensure others can see trick-or-treaters, equip children with flashlights or glow sticks and attach reflective tape to costumes or treat bags.
  • To ensure the safety of the wearer and others, choose costumes that do not have a long strip of fabric.
  • Wear flame retardant costumes;
  • Make sure adults know where children go and what neighborhoods they visit. Young trick-or-treaters should be accompanied to the door by responsible adults.
  • Be careful when dealing with animals, including dogs.
  • Walk, don't run;
  • Accept treats at the door and never enter another person's home.
  • Stay on the sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks in an area, walk on the side of the road facing traffic. Do not drive through yards or alleys;
  • Look both ways before crossing the street and only cross at corners.
