Spirit Halloween Strikes Back With Custom 'Saturday Night Live' Costume Design After Sketch: 'Irrelevant 50th Anniversary Show'

(Gray News) – Spirit Halloween had some words – and a costume design – for “Saturday Night Live” after a sketch spoofed the iconic Christmas shop in last week's episode.

In the “SNL” sketch, the show's cast plays Spirit Halloween spokespersons and staff in a commercial that details the tragedy of dead and dying cities, similar in tone to a Sarah McLachlan-sponsored SPCA commercial featuring sad-looking dogs and cats.

However, the tone becomes even more optimistic when Spirit Halloween shows up in his rented trucks and vans to open a novelty costume shop where the city's last independent grocery store or auto repair shop once stood.

“And thanks to us, what was once a disused auto zone where a murder happened is once again a thriving business where a murder happened,” the “SNL” sketch goes.

The joke is based on a long-running internet meme in which Spirit Halloween will soon take over any building formerly occupied by a business or group of people. The meme has poked fun at everything from depicting Trump Tower covered in a Spirit Halloween banner to the United States Capitol facing a possible government shutdown.

“We provide vulnerable communities with the things they need most: rash-inducing wigs, disposable fog machines, and famous character costumes customized to avoid a lawsuit,” the skit continues.

“Ghost Halloween. If you need us, we are there for you. For six weeks,” the sketch continues. “Because on November 1st we will be gone and all the trash will end up in a dumpster.”

Spirit Halloween decided not to stay silent for long after the roast and added its own joke to the video of the “SNL” skit.

An X post in response to the “SNL” sketch posted a picture of a new costume titled “Irrelevant 50-Year-Old Show.”

The costume packaging says “SNL 50 The Anniversary Season” and states that it contains:

  • Dated references
  • Unknown actors
  • Falling ratings

“We're great at bringing things back from the dead,” the company posted alongside the image, making sure to tag the X account “SNL.”

According to the Associated Press, the comedy show drew 5.3 million live viewers for its 50th season premiere this weekend, marking its best start since 2020.

The store appeared to say the jokes were just in fun in its response to a comment it received.

“Creepy laughter is the best kind,” the reply reads. “Glad to hear it brought Halloween joy! Let’s keep the fun going all season long!”
