Southern Colorado voter numbers are rising quickly

Southern Colorado voter numbers are rising quickly

EL PASO COUNTY – Voter turnout the day before Election Day in El Paso County is one of the highest numbers in the state.

It is exactly 50% and there are estimates that it could reach 90% by the end of the polls on election day.

“I think there’s a lot of interest,” said voter Nakiera Johnson.

Watching the live stream cameras that provided a view of the ballot box at the Citizens Services Center on Garden of the Gods Road, there was a steady stream of voters casting ballots at between three and 10 vehicles per minute.

The drop-off points are now busy, but it will be even busier on election day.

Those who have already filled out their ballots, be warned.

“It’s pretty big,” voter Spencer Rutter said.

Beyond the candidates, there are many election issues to consider here.

“You're definitely going to have to take some time,” Johnson said, “I definitely needed a few days. Me and my family sat together and went through the blue book and just went through them all.”

Thinking that you can get home at six, fill out your ballot, and then drive to the drop-off location may not be the best plan.

“I would reconsider,” Rutter said. “Maybe I’ll give it a little more time if you can.”

If you're in line at the last minute, the general rule is that election judges should accept your ballot if you're in line before 7 p.m., when the polls close.
