Some Social Security recipients will receive an additional check in November. Here's what you should know.

Social Security recipients typically receive one payment per month, but some older Americans could receive an additional check in November as the calendar falls in the last two months of the year.

While the problem isn't new — the Social Security Administration sets its annual payment schedule well in advance — it could surprise some seniors next month if they weren't aware of the unusual schedule.

People who could receive an additional check in November are those receiving Social Security's Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a program for disabled adults and low-income seniors. Some of these SSI recipients also receive monthly Social Security benefits, the traditional retirement income available to people starting at age 62.

SSI recipients will receive an additional payment next month — and some may receive up to three payments in November.

This is how it works:

  • SSI recipients will receive their November payment on Friday, November 1st.
  • Individuals who filed for Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and SSI payments will also receive their Social Security payment on November 1st (typically, individuals who receive both Social Security payments will receive their Social Security payment on the third day of the month, however, since November 3rd is . November falls). on a Sunday, this payment also ends up on November 1st).
  • SSI recipients will also receive a second payment on Friday, November 29th. This reflects their payment in December. However, since December 1st falls on a Sunday, your payment for the last month of 2024 will be on November 29th.

In other words, people receiving SSI will receive two payments in November – on November 1st and November 29th. If they also receive Social Security benefits, they will also receive this check on November 1st, not November 3rd.
