Some problems arise as the 2-2 Niners overwhelm the Patriots

Officially, Brock Purdy rushed for 11 yards on five carries. Unofficially, it might have been closer to 100, as he gave Fran Tarkenton full speed behind a leaky offensive line that tripped him up far too often. Purdy finished 15 of 27 for 288 yards with one TD, one INT and just one sack. Brandon Aiyuk remains all but invisible with another game with fewer than 50 receiving yards. Jordan Mason (24 carries, 123 yards, TD) had his third 100-yard game of the season.

Dominant with a pinch of concern. Fred Warner had a pick-six in the first half, but then suffered an injury just before halftime and did not return. The 49ers had allowed just 167 total yards to the Patriots' worst offense in the NFL before New England unleashed a 50-yard passing play with four minutes left. But don't worry because Nick Bosa ended this drive with a triple: sack, forced fumble, recovery fumble. Kevin Givens had 2.5 and Maliek Collins 1.5 of the 49ers' six sacks.

This remains the 49ers' most problematic aspect. The most noticeable thing on Sunday was Isaac Guerendo's fouling of the second half kickoff. The 49ers were so concerned that when Jacob Cowing was ejected from the game, they instead turned to fullback Kyle Juszczyk for his first career punt return (he picked up 8 yards). On the bright side, Jake Moody was 3 of 3 on field goals and hit all three extra points. Mitch Wishnowksy averaged 44.3 yards on his three punts.

This could be a very busy week for offensive line coach Chris Foerster. The law of averages isn't good for Purdy if he continues to run for his life like he did on Sunday – and against the NFL's 19th-ranked defense, no less. And what can Kyle Shanahan do against Aiyuk? He was targeted five times and managed just two catches.

The 49ers are putting their back-to-back losses behind them, but know that they did so against one of the NFL's junior varsity teams. Exhibit A: They scored three times in a second-quarter drive against a team that seemed incapable of stopping them (the first two touchdowns were negated by penalties). It's important to keep an eye on the injuries to Warner and George Kittle. San Francisco can ill afford to lose another All-Pro or two as the schedule becomes increasingly difficult.
