  • There will be a development window at the beginning of this weekend.
  • If a tropical storm forms, it is not expected to last long over Central America.
  • Heavy rain is Honduras' biggest threat to Mexico.

A swirling low pressure area in the western Caribbean could briefly transform into a tropical depression or storm before reaching Belize or eastern Mexico this weekend.

The system received an Invest 95L designation from the National Hurricane Center. In this case, the marking is made to run special hurricane models on the system.

Satellites monitored an extensive and closed but elongated low pressure area north of Honduras early Friday morning.

Whatever the system looks like, it will shift westward over the weekend. There is a short window until Saturday where it could become more defined and a little stronger before it makes landfall.

The system does not pose a threat to the United States. If Invest 95L becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Nadine.

The biggest threat from this system, whether modernized or not, is heavy rains in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and southern and eastern Mexico.

As it moves west, it will bring 3 to 8 inches of rain in these counties, with up to 15 inches in some communities.

Some areas along the Caribbean coast from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras could experience gusty winds this weekend.
