Severe weather could occur along the Gulf Coast while the Southeast deals with the Helene fallout

The Gulf Coast faces the imminent threat of another tropical disturbance – as the Southeast continues search and recovery efforts following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

According to the National Hurricane Center, a “large, disorganized low pressure area” in the western Caribbean is creating conditions that could lead to a 40 percent chance of tropical disturbances next week.

The area is producing showers and thunderstorms, and the NHC says environmental conditions could lead to further developments as the system slowly moves northwest.

Although it is still too early to know the exact path or intensity of the system, the NHC says the system's progress should be monitored over the next week or so.

The chance of the area becoming a tropical disturbance in the next 48 hours is 0%, but the chance increases to “moderate,” or 40%, in the next seven days.

The development of the potential tropical disturbance comes as Post-Tropical Cyclone Isaac, Tropical Depression Joyce and Tropical Storm Kirk are brewing over the Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Kirk, which is expected to become a major hurricane by midweek, continues to move west.

According to the NHS, Kirk's path is expected to take a gradual turn northwest into the Gulf of Mexico, potentially impacting the northwest Caribbean and the US Gulf Coast, which is still recovering from Helene's deadly aftermath.

Tropical Storm Kirk is located 690 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.

Post-tropical Cyclone Isaac and Tropical Depression Joyce are unlikely to make landfall, according to NHS forecasts.

Hurricane Helene hit Florida on Thursday as a Category 4 storm, the strongest storm ever to make landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida.

The storm caused mass destruction across the Southeast, destroying cities, stranding hundreds and killing over 120 people through devastating wind, rain and flooding.
