Republicans take the lead in early swing state voting

Republicans take the lead in early swing state voting

While the early voting numbers appear to be favoring Republicans, other trends have emerged that could raise concerns in the Trump camp.

Nationally, 54 percent of early votes were cast by women, a group that is on track to give Kamala Harris 56 percent of her vote.

Women are more likely to vote earlier than men, but their shift to Democrats means Trump will need more male voters — who tend to lean toward Trump — on Election Day.

In Pennsylvania, the most lucrative swing state in terms of votes, early voters are traditionally predominantly registered Democrats.

In 2024, 63 percent of Democrats said they planned to vote before the election, compared to 47 percent of Republicans.

Early voting is now carried out in the vast majority of US states. However, not all states publicly provide information about the political composition of voters.

In 2016, 13 states made this report, only two of which, Arizona and Nebraska, had more Republicans than Democrats voting before the election. Of those 13 states, eight states now have early voting with a Republican majority.

This year, however, there has been greater transparency: 28 states now provide the data, with Republicans leading in 18 — or two-thirds — of them.

Although the numbers suggest Republicans are in the lead, voters don't actually have to vote for the party they're registered with.

The figures also do not take into account the proportion of voters who do not belong to a party or are independent. The results of these independent votes will not be announced until election day.
