Red card for William Saliba: Arsenal star sent off for controversial incident (video)

Red card for William Saliba: Arsenal star sent off for controversial incident (video)

Arsenal had a man sent off for the third time in this young Premier League season, but was William Saliba's VAR-assisted dismissal on Saturday the right decision?

The incident happened before the half-hour mark of Arsenal's game at Bournemouth. Evanilson makes a good run to get past the Arsenal defensive line after Leandro Trossard makes an erratic back pass, and Saliba tackles the Brazilian to the ground rather than trying to get him to the loose ball.

Chief referee Rob Jones paused before showing a yellow card, but the video assistant referee immediately got to work.

The footage showed Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya retreating towards his goal line and Ben White falling far short of trying to get Evanilson to the ball.

Jones was sent to the screen and saw this was the denial of a clear scoring opportunity, leaving Arsenal down to 10 men in a goalless Premier League game at the Vitality Stadium.

What do you think? Was it the right call? The letter of the law seems clear as day. And Arsenal ended up losing 2-0 on the south coast of England.
