Here is a recent soccer story from AP:

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona continued its perfect start to the Spanish league season but lost goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to a serious knee injury on Sunday.

Barcelona beat hosts Villarreal 5-1 to claim their sixth consecutive victory in the competition, but captain ter Stegen had to leave the game on a stretcher just before half-time after he fell and twisted his right knee while diving to follow a cross into the box.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said the injury appeared to be a torn ligament but further tests were being carried out. According to local media reports, Ter Stegen was taken from the stadium to hospital by ambulance and left the hospital in a wheelchair.

“This injury makes us sad. I think the injury will be huge, but we have to wait for more information,” said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. “We have to accept it. It's not easy. It was an accident. It's very hard.”

Players from both teams immediately called for medical help after ter Stegen fell to the ground in pain. He was replaced by reserve goalkeeper Iñaki Peña.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who missed most of last season with a similar injury, showed his support for ter Stegen with a message on X. He said it hurt to see his colleague leave the field like that and he hoped he would recover soon.

It was the latest injury to Flick's Barcelona, which is already without Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi and Ronald Araujo, among others.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the first half and Raphinha added two more after the break. Pablo Torre also scored for the Catalan club in the second half. Lewandowski has now scored six goals in his first six games and is the league's leading goalscorer.

Ayoze Pérez scored the only goal for the hosts in the 38th minute when his team was already 2-0 down. Villarreal had entered the round in fourth place, four points behind Barcelona.

Barcelona have scored more goals than their opponents in their first six games (22:5) and are four points ahead of Real Madrid, who beat Espanyol 4:1 on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid saved

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to keep up with Barcelona after a 1-1 draw with Madrid rivals Rayo Vallecano.

Rayo took the lead through Isi Palazón in the 35th minute and Conor Gallagher equalised for the visitors in the 49th minute.

Atletico had three consecutive wins in all competitions.

Other results from Sunday: Getafe and Leganes drew 1-1 and Athletic Bilbao beat Celta Vigo 3-1.
