Bengaluru, which received incessant rain on Tuesday following the onset of the northeast monsoon, is likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall over the next three days.

CS Patil, scientist and director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, said the city is very likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the next three days.

“The southwest monsoon withdrew from Karnataka on October 15. At the same time, the northeast monsoon rain activity started over the southeast peninsula today (Tuesday). A well-developed low pressure area lies over the central part of the southern Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining southern coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 24 hours. Under the influence of this system, coastal Karnataka and southern interior Karnataka are likely to experience widespread rainfall and northern interior Karnataka is most likely to experience fairly widespread rainfall from October 15 to 18,” Mr Patil said .

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Bengaluru, Kolar, Chickballapur, Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Dharward, Belagavi and Haveri districts Yellow and orange alerts have been announced from October 15 to 17,” Mr Patil said.

The IMD further said that the maximum and minimum temperatures in Bengaluru on Wednesday are most likely to be around 22 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Rain fell overnight into the morning of Tuesday and continued into the evening.

According to the IMD, 59.8 mm of rainfall fell in Bengaluru, 80.1 mm at HAL airport and 4.2 mm at Kempegowda International Airport till 5.30 pm. on Tuesday.
