“Polling Nostradamus,” who bet on Harris, realizes he was wrong

An American political historian known as the “Nostradamus” of elections was apparently stunned early Wednesday when he realized his prediction – that Kamala Harris would win the presidential election – was wrong.

Allen Lichtman, who has correctly predicted the outcome of nine of the 10 elections since 1984, was filmed on a livestream repeatedly saying, “I don't understand this” as Donald Trump's landslide victory became apparent.

The 77-year-old professor and his son Sam shared their stunned reactions in real time as the results emerged near the end of their nearly six hours of coverage of the election.

“This is the first moment of the night where I lost a little hope,” Sam Lichtman said as media outlets called Pennsylvania for Trump.

The elder Lichtman rubbed his eyes, visibly frustrated with the data, and said, “It's a good thing I don't have anything to do tomorrow. And I don't do interviews.”

Lichtman, an American university professor widely known as the “Nostradamus” of the U.S. presidential election, backed the vice president this year despite polling data suggesting another Trump presidency was on the horizon.

The professor is co-inventor of the Key to the White House metric, which includes 13 categories for assessing the prospects of the two major party candidates. According to Lichtman, Harris was ahead in eight of those metrics this year, compared to Trump's three.

As the livestream neared its end and both Lichtmans grew increasingly frustrated with the numbers showing Trump ahead in all seven swing states, Allan Lichtman said there was “nothing positive” in the data for Harris.

“Oh, democracy is gone,” said a dejected-sounding Lichtman. “Once democracy is gone, it is almost impossible to restore it. The path to recovery is for dictators to lose wars.”

Sam Lichtman was less apocalyptic, saying he hopes Trump serves out his term and “we never have to deal with him again.”

“I’ve said it a hundred times,” his father replied. “Democracy is precious, but like all precious things, it can be destroyed. And usually destroyed from within. And as the 21st century progresses, democracy is in decline around the world, and America is now in lockstep with the decline. But never give up hope.”

“It’s unbelievable,” Lichtman concluded the stream.
