Harris was sworn into office in 2011 and served as California's top prosecutor for six years.

CBS reported that as attorney general, she launched a groundbreaking package of mortgage debt relief for homeowners affected by poor foreclosure practices. She also worked on criminal justice reform, including requiring California police officers to wear body cameras, and supported various climate change efforts.

However, some of her decisions while serving as prosecutor were criticized by progressives.

Before 2018, she opposed legalizing recreational marijuana, and convictions of drug sellers rose in her district from 56% in 2003 to 74% in 2008, Harris wrote in her 2009 book “Smart on Crime,” NBC News reported.

She has also been criticized for upholding the death penalty and opposing the release of lower-level offenders.

“I have been consistent throughout my career,” Harris said when asked at a rally in January 2019 about her “tough on crime” attitude while working as a prosecutor.

“My career was based on the understanding that it was my duty as a prosecutor to ensure that the most vulnerable and voiceless among us were protected, and that is why I personally prosecuted violent crimes, including rape, child abuse and murder,” she said. “And I have also worked throughout my career to reform the criminal justice system, understanding up to your point that it is deeply flawed,” she continued.

As San Francisco district attorney, she supported a city policy that turned young immigrants over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement when they were arrested or charged with a crime.

In a statement to CNN, a Harris campaign spokesman said the policy “could have been applied more fairly.”

Harris left office in 2017 after being elected to the Senate.
