Music from Olivia Rodrigo to Avril Lavigne

Just in time for Halloween, Netflix's latest youth film was released, a slasher in multiple senses of the word. The scary movie stars Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) and Madison Bailey (Outer Banks), when the field sisters were separated by time and space – twenty years of it. The film begins with Lucy (Madison Bailey) living the life of a normal teenager on the anniversary of her sister's death.

Bailey's Lucy, who wants to intern at NASA in Washington D.C. for the summer and has the brains to dream up time travel, stumbles upon a mysterious machine at the site of her sister's death that allows her to return to the early hours of the current day to try to save Gentry's Summer from a serial killer called the Sweetly Slasher. Lucy faces the difficult task of doing this without disrupting the future and breaking timelines. Griffin Gluck (Locke & Key, Cruel summer) also appears.

Multiple pinpricks — from Fat Joe, Olivia Rodrigo, Vanessa Carlton, Wheatus, Avril Lavigne, and others — make clear what time or nostalgic memory viewers are in, signaling the importance of pop culture in these moments. Additional details like a Buffy the Vampire Slayer poster in Summer's room, an iPhone, wardrobe differences and more show the stark contrast between then and now.
