Multiple minor injuries following a ten-vehicle accident involving two 18-wheelers on I-459

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Authorities have closed all northbound lanes and all but one southbound lane of Interstate 459 near Acton Road after a 10-vehicle crash occurred Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials with the Rocky Ridge Fire Department, the accident occurred around 3 p.m

According to authorities, ten vehicles were involved in the accident, including two 18-wheelers.

We're told the incident occurred when the driver of an 18-wheeler traveling southbound was involved in an accident along with several other vehicles before crossing the median into the northbound lane and striking a second 18-wheeler vehicle hit.

Officials said the driver of the 18-wheeler, which crossed the median, had to be extricated from the vehicle. We're told the driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

We're told three other people in the other vehicles suffered minor injuries – one of them went to a hospital for treatment, two of them didn't.

The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was called to the scene to assist with hazardous materials issues. We were informed that the saddlebags of one of the 18-wheelers contained diesel and were leaking, requiring some cleanup in the northbound lanes.

Authorities are unsure how long it will take to clear the area or reopen the highway to traffic.

We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
