COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland opens the 2024-25 season on Monday, November 4th against Manhattan at XFINITY Center. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed on B1G+. Fans can watch the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network, with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the shots alongside Chris Knoche and Walt Williams. The Terps will open the year with five straight home games, highlighted by a visit from Marquette on Friday, November 15th at 8:00 p.m. on FS1.

Opening Streak

  • Maryland has a 47-game winning streak in home openers, which ranks third in the nation. The streak began with the 1977 season. The last time Maryland lost an opening game at home was November 27, 1976.
  • The Terps are 312-75 (.806) all-time at the XFINITY Center, including 27-7 (.794) underneath Kevin Willard. Maryland has won nine straight non-conference home games and 15 straight games against opponents not ranked in the conference.
  • Maryland's 47-game winning streak in home openers is the third-longest active streak in the nation. The series began in the 1977 season when the Terps tied with Michigan State, which lost its home opener last year.
  • The last time Maryland lost an opening game at home was on November 27, 1976 against Notre Dame (80-79) in overtime.
  • Before the Notre Dame loss, the Terps had won eight straight home openers since 1968-69. Maryland has won 59 of 61 since 1963-64.

New season, new faces

  • Maryland appears to be rebounding from a disappointing 2023-24 season. During the offseason, Willard and his staff revamped the roster with several key transfers and two talented rookies. Derik Queen enters as the second-highest recruit in program history. On the transfer side Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Selton MiguelAnd Rodney Rice Add instant scoring and consistent shooting from deep.
  • Julian Reese hosts the program as he returns for his fourth season in College Park. Reese is considered one of the best frontcourt players in the conference and reached 1,000 career points last season. He could reach 1,000 career rebounds this year.
  • Together with Reese the development of DeShawn Harris Smithone of the best Power 5 rookies last year, and Jordan Geronimo Providing key experience for the Terps. Returning from an injury Chance Stephens Adds another perimeter threat on transfers Tafara Gapare And Jay Young add athletic depth and dynamic defense to the lineup.

  • Julian Reese enters the 2024-25 season as one of the top post players in the Big Ten and nationally. He earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors as a junior last season after being named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
  • Reese posted 15 double-doubles last season, ninth-most nationally, and ranked second in the Big Ten during the regular season.
  • Reese has a total of 22 double-doubles in the 2024-25 season.
  • Since 2010-11, Reese has the fourth-most double-doubles of any Terp player.

“DeShawn wants to build on his freshman year.”

  • DeShawn Harris Smith played in every game for Maryland last year as a true freshman, making 30 starts. He was the program's leading rookie scorer since the trio of Jalen Smith (11.7 ppg), Eric Ayala (8.6) and Aaron Wiggins (8.3) in the 2018-19 season.
  • Against Iowa, Harris-Smith became the second Maryland freshman in the last 15 years to score 15+ points and 5+ rebounds off the bench while shooting 70.0 percent or better from the field (Diamond Stone vs. Marshall in the 2015–16 season).
  • Harris-Smith played at least 20 minutes in all 33 games, tying the second-longest streak of any Division I freshman this season (Drake's Kevin Overton – 33).
