Memphis Basketball vs North Carolina: Match updates, live score

Memphis Basketball vs North Carolina: Match updates, live score

The newest incarnation of Penny Hardaway's Memphis basketball team makes its long-awaited and highly anticipated debut today against North Carolina – albeit in an exhibition setting.

Memphis and UNC have never met in men's basketball.

The new-look Tigers face Hubert Davis' Tar Heels (No. 9 in the preseason AP Top 25) in the “first-ever” Hoops For St. Jude Tip Off Classic at FedExForum (6 p.m., ESPNU). The event is a four-team evening of college basketball, including the Memphis women's basketball team taking on South Carolina (8:30 p.m., ESPN+). Dawn Staley's team is the defending national champions.

All proceeds from ticket sales for the games will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Among Hardaway's and the Tigers' goals is to get a better sense of the progress they've made since meeting for summer training in June. Led by transfers Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty and Dain Dainja, Memphis' roster is made up almost entirely of newcomers. The only scholarship player to return after last season is forward Nicholas Jourdain.

North Carolina will not have All-American guard RJ Davis (back injury) but will have plenty of firepower in Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble and 5-star freshman Ian Jackson.

Tigers reserve Baraka Okojie missed all of summer training with a left shoulder injury that required surgery.

Okojie entered the game after the first media timeout and contributed two rebounds and a steal within a few minutes.

The Tigers controlled the opening tip and methodically worked the ball inside to center Dain Dainja, who scored the first points with a layup over the glass.

The Tar Heels responded with a 7-0 run, with Seth Trimble scoring 5 of those points.

Memphis fought back after that and cut the lead to 11-10 at the first media timeout.

Tigers: Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty, Colby Rogers, Nicholas Jourdain, Dain Dainja

Tar Heels: Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Cade Tyson, Jae'Lyn Withers, Jalen Washington

North Carolina All-American point guard RJ Davis will not play in Tuesday's exhibition game against Memphis, a Tar Heels spokesman confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. He left the program's Blue-White scrimmage last week with a lower back injury. The spokesman said the decision was purely a precautionary measure.

Memphis center Moussa Cisse will also be sidelined on Tuesday. Hardaway said last week that Cisse was recovering from a groin injury.
