Meet the winner of DC's High Heel Race and see the stunning looks – NBC4 Washington

The High Heel Race — perhaps DC's most fabulous Halloween season tradition — returned for its 37th year on Tuesday night with stunning outfits and sky-high shoes.

Dozens of kings, queens and everyone in between showed up in their best for a fun run of 17Th Street, but a cowpoke named Kenny Monroe galloped ahead of the others.

“It feels great – I crashed last year so it's nice to be back!” said Monroe. “Redemption story.”

Hundreds, including DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, marched along 17thTh street to watch the race.

“It’s a pretty evening in DC,” Bowser said.

The race, which began in the 1980s, is also a commemoration of LGBTQ+ history in DC

It started with a group of drag queens running from JR's Bar to Annie's Paramount Steakhouse (another gay history spot), where they stopped for drinks on the second floor. Then they ran back down the 16 steps, through the crowded restaurant and back to JR's. The winner would receive $100 off their cash (approximately $290 in 2024!).
