Maxwell Hairston lured Ohio QB to a record-breaking pick-six

Maxwell Hairston lured Ohio QB to a record-breaking pick-six

There is just something about Week 4 that brings out the best in Maxwell HairstonLast year, the standout cornerback caught two interceptions and returned them both in a road win at Vanderbilt – two of five interceptions this season. This time, he grabbed another ball in the flat and returned it 25 yards for his third career pick-six, setting a school record for the Kentucky football team.

The big moment came in the third quarter when he caught a screen pass from Ohio State's Nick Poulos for the easiest touchdown of the day in the Wildcats' 41-6 victory. And the best part? Hairston actually lured the Bobcats' quarterback into throwing and secured the point.

“We were in our five-man coverage. Cover 2 is a little weak, so I had to redirect. I really tried to bait the quarterback and he took it,” the star defensive back said after the game. “When I saw his look go into the flat and I saw him crack the shells, I said, 'Yeah, that's me. That's me.'”

Mark Stoops confirmed Hairston's assessment of the swing, saying that the projected first-round draft pick next spring couldn't have executed the play better – a perfect interpretation that led to the record-breaking pick six.

Their trick against the inexperienced backup quarterback worked.

“He did a really good job. He tricked him into that throw. Coach (Brad) White “We had a really good call there,” Stoops said on the radio after the game. “We passed the linebacker in the nickel, but we really went into the zone. I'm sure the quarterback thought it was man, the way the Mike linebacker pushed through the zone, but we just exchanged zones there, so it looked man. I didn't see it, Max and I talked about it afterward. I thought it was Pop (Dumas-Johnson)then I look down and see that it's Maxwell.

“He caught that, so it was good execution with Max, like we talked about. He sat on him, showed a soft corner and he actually rolled up on him.”

Hairston didn't realize it at the time, but after the win he realized that his three pick-sixes all came in Week 4 wins. There's only one explanation for something like that, he says.

“I was thinking about it in the shower,” he said. “I thought, 'Last year in Week 4, I got my first pick-six – two of them.' And now it's Week 4? That's God. That's God.”

Does it ever get boring?

“No, but I have to think of a touchdown celebration,” Hairston joked. “I have to get better at that. It's going so fast, I'm just trying to find my family.”

Now he'll have to find a way back into the end zone next week in Oxford against a pass-happy Ole Miss team to keep the momentum going. Maybe if we tell him again it's only Week 4, he'll do it?

“Yeah, yeah! Come on! Hey, we're definitely going to get some chances,” Hairston said. “They're throwing the ball in the air, so we've just got to do our job, have good eyes and play disciplined. We're going to get one.”
