Martin Scorsese to direct Robbie Robertson tribute show

Martin Scorsese will direct the filming of a Robbie Robertson tribute concert in LA on Thursday night for a future release, it was announced Tuesday morning.

The filming of “Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson,” a Blackbird Presents production, could be a bookend of sorts to the first film Scorsese made with Robertson, when he directed the concert film “The Last Waltz.” led. which was reminiscent of the last concert the singer-songwriter-guitarist gave with his group The Band in 1976.

Before it was announced that he would be spending the evening overseeing filming, Scorsese was already serving as one of the concert's executive producers, along with Jared Levine, Keith Wortman and Scooter Weintraub.

Artists performing at the Kia Forum on Thursday include Trey Anastasio, Eric Church, Eric Clapton, Warren Haynes, Bruce Hornsby, Jim James, Daniel Lanois, Taj Mahal, Van Morrison, Margo Price, Robert Randolph, Nathaniel Rateliff, Allison Russell, Mavis Staples, Bobby Weir and Lucinda Williams.

The house band includes Ryan Bingham, Jamey Johnson, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Don Was, John Medeski, Dave Malone, Terence Higgins, Cyril Neville, Mark Mullins and the Levee Horns.

Robertson served as either music director or composer for Scorsese films in the decades from “The Last Waltz” until his death in 2023, most recently scoring “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Robertson's posthumous nomination for Best Original Score for this film was his first.

“I mean, we're in awe ourselves that our brotherhood has endured through everything,” Robertson said in an interview with about his connection to Scorsese diversity shortly before he died. “You know, we were there. We've been through it. We went there and back. Our story is a journey. … I am so proud of our friendship and our work. It was simply a gift in life. And at the same time, I didn't have to just do what he does. I can also do what I do with other people. So, yeah, I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”

The format in which a film of the Robertson concert might be released was not disclosed as part of the announcement. Blackbird Presents has specialized in all-star tribute concerts in recent years, many of which were filmed and some of which were released in theaters before VOD release, such as Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl was filmed and finally shown in the cinema. The involvement of a director of Scorsese's ilk certainly increases the chances of a Robertson film being released in theaters.
