Mace, Clyburn and Fry win re-election for U.S. House seats in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC/AP) – The Palmetto State's three incumbent congressmen won re-election on Tuesday.

Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina secured victory in the 1st Congressional District even before the race was officially called.

As of 9:30 p.m., Mace had 58.3% of the vote, while his Democratic challenger Michael Moore had 41.7%, with about 36.3% of votes counted.

At a rally, she told supporters that the world was looking to America and that “we have to show them what we're made of.”

“We will be courageous, we will be united, we will be resilient and we will be ready to meet the challenges of this moment,” she said.

The Associated Press has since called the race for Mace.

Moore is a businessman and former CEO of the International African American Museum. His campaign has struggled to gain traction and Mace has barely acknowledged he is in the race.

Moore said Mace is more concerned with national attention and pet issues like marijuana legalization than with helping people in her district. She joined seven far-right Republicans to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Mace said it's her way of fighting for voters in her diverse district, which includes century-old neighborhoods near Charleston and massive retirement communities around Beaufort that have moved to South Carolina.

A win on Tuesday and Mace is on track to become a permanent part of South Carolina's U.S. House delegation – like Democrat Jim Clyburn or Republican Joe Wilson.

Clyburn wins 17th term

Clyburn has represented the state's 6th District since it was elected in 1992 with a majority of minority voters. This year, his Republican challenger is attorney Duke Buckner in the sprawling district bordered by the Charleston, Beaufort and Columbia areas.

Clyburn won the race with about 58% of the vote to Buckner's 38%. None of the other three candidates received more than 2% of the vote.

Clyburn is a key member of the Democratic leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives, and his support of President Joe Biden just before the 2020 presidential primary in South Carolina paved his longtime friend's path to victory.

Fry re-elected in 7th District race

U.S. Rep. Russel Fry was the first of the three incumbent U.S. Congressmen representing the Lowcountry to be declared the winner.

Fry represents the 7th District, which stretches from Myrtle Beach to Florence in the northeast part of the state. Fry defeated an incumbent Republican in 2022 who had voted to impeach Trump.

Fry's challenger is teacher Mal Hyman, who described himself as an independent Democrat.

As of 9:30 p.m., Fry had 63.7% of the votes counted and Hyman had 36.3%, an estimated 50.6% of the total votes counted.
